Vulnerabilities in backup software

by Nikola Strahija on January 19th, 2006 Veritas Netbackup and EMC Networker, both backup applications, were hit by several serious security vulnerabilities, which are now patched.

EMC has issued security patches for three versions of Networker. They fix problems, which could lead to a system crash or unauthorized remote access.

Exploit code targeting Veritas' Netbackup product was also patched. A buffer overflow in a shared library affects 5.x versions of servers and clients. If successful, an exploit could allow a hacker to deny service or execute arbitrary code.
