Use Google to detect malware

by Nikola Strahija on July 8th, 2006 Websense computer security company revealed that it uses Google to search for sites hosting malicious content.

By incorporating a little known Google feature, the ability to search binary strings, into their own software, Websense computer security experts were able to detect thousands of websites containing malicious content.

Google binary search allowed researchers to look into usually unreadable .exe files which can be executed on Windows PCs, and are usually hosted on various malware websites. Although Websense researchers plan to release their software's code to some colleagues, they will not make it public out of fear it would also help hackers achieve their goals.
