Symantec kicks AOL users offline

by Ivana Strahija on March 19th, 2006 Users who have Symantec Norton anti-virus products and connect to the internet through AOL had quite some problems last week.

On March 15 LiveUpdate, which handles anti-virus updates for Norton AV and Internet Security software, downloaded an erroneous signature last week. This caused Norton to falsely identify AOL internet traffic as malicious, and block access to the Internet.

Although Symantec released a fix few hours later, users weren't able to connect to the internet to get it. The only solution to those affected by the bug is to download the patch from a computer with different anti-virus product, or call the Symantec land line to get live support.
