Script kiddies crash Symantec users

by Ivana Strahija on March 6th, 2006 Users of Symantec Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall got kicked off various IRC channels all through the last week because if the products' specific glitch.

Typing 'startkeylogger' or 'stopkeylogger', commands typically used by Spybot worm, in an IRC channel, kicks off anyone using the affected Norton products without warning.

The bug was posted by HM2K on his blog, and soon the word spread through the community. Everybody tried the prank on their IRC channels, just to prove it true, while some script kiddies went wild, retyping the commands like crazy.

Several IRC channels are now filtering out those phrases.

HM2K suspects that the issue has been known to Symantec for two years now and that it was invented to protect their users from Spybot. The company said in a statement that it was working on removing this issue.
