Phishers develop new tehniques

by Nikola Strahija on March 11th, 2006 As the computer world recognizes the phishing threat more seriously than ever, the villains resort to even cleverer techniques. The newest one is called smart site redirection and seems to be working for the time being.

Naftali Bennett of RSA Security says: -The goal of the phisher is to keep his spoofed site alive as long as possible. The longer the site remains active, the more victims a phisher can dupe into divulging confidential information such as bank or credit account usernames, passwords, and PINs.'

Smart site redirection gives the phishers just that. They create numerous identical copies of the spoofed site but each has it's own URL. So when the phishing e-mails go out, all include a link to yet another site, a "central redirector". When the potential victim clicks on the e-mailed link, the redirector checks all the phishing sites, identifies which are still live, and invisibly redirects the user to one.
