Microsoft announces war to phishers

by Nikola Strahija on March 21st, 2006 The software giant announced yesterday it's going on a crusade against phishers, raising over 100 legal actions against scammers in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Microsoft with its Global Phishing Enforcement Initiative recognizes phishing as one of the main cybercrimes. The GPEI goal is to better coordinate and expand Microsoft's previous antiphishing efforts. It will work with law enforcement agencies, different industry sectors, and governments to raise the number of prosecutions, better user education and finding new ways to fight phishing.

53 of 100 legal actions are already being prosecuted in Austria, Egypt, France, Morocco, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Microsoft from its behalf identifies the phishing sites, notifies the ISPs and provides the URLs and e-mail addresses to the police.
