Linux privileged process hijack

by Mario Miri on April 8th, 2003 Due to a bug in linux kernel 2.2.x prior to 2.2.25 and 2.4.x it is possible to the unprivileged user to gain control of privileged process. This occurs because of a bug in ptrace() system call. A malicious user can gain superuser privileges.


Vulnerable:
Linux kernel 2.2.x prior to 2.2.25
Linux kernel 2.4.x


Solution:
Kernel upgrade. Fixes are also available from official linux distributors.
