Killed over soccer bet debt

by ivy on August 7th, 2001 HONG KONG: A 23-year-old gambler was beaten to death in Hong Kong over a $6400 soccer betting debt.

The waiter was kicked and punched yesterday morning outside a club in the Mongkok district and died after being taken unconscious to hospital.

Eight suspected gang members were being sought by police yesterday in connection with the killing.

Betting on football is illegal in Hong Kong, but underworld figures organise big-money gambling syndicates to allow punters to stake money on matches.

The government is conducting a review to decide whether to legalise soccer gambling to tackle the problem of illegal syndicates. The only legal forms of gambling in Hong Kong are currently horse racing and a government-run lottery.
