PROBLEM: Potential vulnerability regarding miniserv.pl in
(1) Webmin before 1.070, and
(2) Usermin before 1.000 does not properly handle
metacharacters such as line feeds and carriage returns
(CRLF) in Base-64 encoded strings during Basic
authentication, which allows remote attackers to
potentially spoof a session ID and potentially gain root
privileges.

Note: Usermin is currently not shipped in any of the products
mentioned below.

More details are available at:

IMPACT: Potential to increase privileges from remote.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
A. Background
The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project
http://cve.mitre.org/ has identified multiple potential
vulnerabilities in the Webmin GUI Administration tool
(CAN-2003-0101). It affects the following HP product
numbers/versions on HP-UX releases 11.00, 11.11, 11.20
and 11.22::

- hp apache-based web server, 1.3.27.00 or earlier
(ApacheStrong/B9415AA)

- hp apache-based web server, 2.0.43.00 or earlier
(HPApache/B9416AA, HPApache/B9416BA)

- hp-ux webmin-based admin, v.1.0.00.01 or earlier
(hpuxwsWEBMIN/hpuxwsWebmin)

B. Recommended solution
The Webmin Group has released Webmin 1.070 as the best known
version that fixes the problems identified in the above
mentioned issues.

For customers using ApacheStrong/B9415AA, HP has incorporated
Webmin 1.070 in the following products:
- B9415AA: hp apache-based web server 1.3.27.01
This product includes Webmin 1.070.

For customers using HPApache/B9416AA, HPApache/B9416BA and
hpuxwsWEBMIN/hpuxwsWebmin, HP has incorporated Webmin 1.070
in the following products:
- hpuxwsWebmin: hp-ux webmin-based admin v.1.0.01.01 or
later;
This product includes Webmin 1.070.

NOTE: No IPv6 solution is available at this time. This Security
Bulletin will be updated when such becomes available.

Check for Webmin Installation
-----------------------------
To determine if the Webmin GUI Administration Tool from HP
is installed on your system, use Software Distributor's swlist
command. Since Webmin is not visible at the "product" level
for products prior to hpuxwsWEBMIN, search for Apache as well.
All versions of products may co-exist on a single system.

For example, the results of the commands:
swlist -l product | grep -i webmin
hpuxwsWEBMIN A.1.0.00.01 HP-UX Webmin-based Admin

swlist -l product | grep -i apache

ApacheStrong 1.3.19.21 HP Apache-based Web Server
with Strong (128bit) Encryption
HPApache 2.0.39.01.02 HP Apache-based Web Server

In the above examples, all of these need to be updated.

Stop Webmin
-----------------------------
Before updating, make sure to stop any previous Webmin binary.
Otherwise, the previous binary will continue running,
preventing the new one from starting, although the installation
would be successful.

After determining which Webmin is installed, stop Webmin with
the following commands:

for ApacheStrong: /opt/apache/webmin/webmin-init stop
for HPApache: /opt/hpapache2/webmin/webmin-init stop
for hpuxwsWEBMIN: /opt/hpws/webmin/webmin-init stop

Since Webmin is bundled with Apache for products prior to
hpuxwsWEBMIN, Apache also needs to be stopped.

for ApacheStrong: /opt/apache/bin/apachectl stop
for HPApache: /opt/hpapache2/bin/apachectl stop

Download and Install Webmin/Apache
-----------------------------
- Download Webmin/Apache from Software Depot using the
previously mentioned links.
- Verify successful download by comparing the cksum with the
value specified on the installation web page.
- Use SD to swinstall the depot.
- For customers with HPApache/B9416AA or HPApache/B9416BA
installed, migrate to hpuxwsWEBMIN/hpuxwsWebmin and
remove the affected products from the system.

Installation of this new version of HP Apache over an existing
HP Apache installation is supported, while installation over a
non-HP Apache is NOT supported.

Removing Webmin Installation
----------------------------
If you rather remove Webmin from your system than install a
newer version to resolve the security problem, use both
Software Distributor's "swremove" command and also "rm -rf" the
home location as specified in the rc.config.d file "HOME"
variables.

To find the files containing HOME variables in the
/etc/rc.config.d directory:

For ApacheStrong/B9415AA, HPApache/B9416AA, and
HPApache/B9416BA when removing Webmin, you will also remove
Apache.
%ls /etc/rc.config.d | grep apache
apacheconf
hpapache2conf

NOTE: For HP Apache 1.3.x, you must manually remove the
Apache directory in addition to the Tomcat directory.
Apache is under directory "/opt/apache" for
HP Apache 1.3.x.

For hpuxwsWebmin/hpuxwsWebmin:
%ls /etc/rc.config.d | grep webmin
hpws_webminconf
