Hack in the Box - Capture the Flag

by Ivana Strahija on August 9th, 2006 The most famous security conference in the region has issued a press release about the anticipated Capture the Flag competition.

3-5 players per team, over two days, and only their own knowledge and skills to rely upon will be fighting to secure their servers from other team's attacks and to exploit security vulnerabilities in their opponents servers at the same time. Sounds like fun to any sys admin.

-The CTF creates an avenue for hackers to show their skills in an environment that is both legal, fun and at the same time allows information security practitioners the opportunity to showcase their security research capabilities and skills, said Meling Mudin, lead organizer of the Capture The Flag competition and a core member of the HITB team.

Based upon popularity of this competition in previous years, Hack in the Box organizers are expecting a good turn up this year too, with teams coming from Malaysia, Europe, Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia. -We expect the challenge to be tighter this year with a lot more custom exploits to be overcome. We will continue to maintain the proven attack and defense model we've employed over the past few years, continues Mudin.

If the sole pleasure of competing with peers is not enough, hackers will also be awarded prizes for taking one of first three places: The first placed team will receive RM3,000 (around $800) in cash with RM2,000 and RM1,000 going to the teams placed second and third. But the bragging and the fact of being the best hacking team of the region is priceless.
