Google settlement under review

by Ivana Strahija on July 24th, 2006 The $90 million settlement Google has reached with its advertisers is being reviewed after dozens of objections arrived to court. Google says the settlement is fair.

Class action lawsuit against Google accused the search giant for not trying hard enough to prevent click fraud. Many companies which were involved in the AdWords program claimed to be victims of fraudulent clicks and websites heightening their profits with illicit activities. Google charged the companies for each click, although it should have checked whether any mischief has taken place.

The settlement reached and preliminary approved by the judge was for $90 million, but in credits for the AdWords program so that none of the advertisers defrauded would receive any real money.

The AdWords program has generated an estimated $16 billion since 2001.
