First cell phone virus
by Nikola Strahija on June 16th, 2004 It was only a matter of time before virus writers turned their attention to mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs. Experts have been predicting the emergence of a virus attacking cell-phone OS's fot the last few years.
According to Panda Software, the virus has been named Cabire and can infect mobile devices with malicious code.
The creators of the worm have not deisgned the worm to spread ona a massive scale, but only to demonstrate that cell phones and PDAs can be infected by malicious code.
"This is a proof of concept worm," Panda CTO Patrick Hinojosa told NewsFactor. "We won't see it spread very rapidly, because there are a number of physical limitations to keep it from mass replicating."
On the other hand, Panda Software notes, it is possible that the Caribe.sis file copies itself to other devices using Bluetooth. In such cases, however, the worm would not be able to spread further.
