Blackworm will overwrite files

by Ivana Strahija on January 27th, 2006 Blackworm, also known as Nyxem, MyWife or Tearec is programmed to overwrite user's files on 3 February. It has already infected more than 300,000 systems worldwide.

Blackworm is delivered as an attachment to email messages with spoofed sender addresses offering obscene pictures or pornographic movie clips. The worm only affects Windows PCs.

If activated, Blackworm first tries to disable security software, than it tries to gather email addresses from infected PCs. Blackworm is programmed to download updates of its code onto infected PCs.

The worm is also programmed to overwrite DOC, XLS, MDB, MDE, PPT, PPS, ZIP, RAR, PDF, PSD and DMP on 3 February. It creates and opens a ZIP archive in the Windows system directory, potentially giving away its presence on infected systems.

Windows users are advised to run scans for infected using up-to-date anti-virus signatures.
