Cisco VoIP surveillance

By: Nikola Strahija on May 11, 2003

Back in March, Cisco submitted a standard for a "Lawful Intercept in IP Networks" service to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force).

While developing the technology, Cisco provides an easier means to do something that is already possible. If the service provider encrypts it's traffic, the standard provides mechanisms for ISPs to turn over encryption keys to law enforcement agencies.

Wiretaps are normally made only with judicial oversight, but Cisco says it's up to users to make sure that relevant laws are observed and obeyed.

The man behind the lawful interception standard draft is Fred Baker, a former chairman of the IETF.
